2023 was a BIG year for PCR, and we couldn't have done it without you. We opened a new indoor facility, launched our new brand, built several new partnerships, and are now gearing up to replace our dock later this month.
PCR was founded 14 years ago to create a diverse, equitable, and transformative environment for Philadelphia's youth to define and build their future. For too long, rowing in Philadelphia had only been accessible to wealthy families and students at private schools and elite universities. Public school students were missing out on opportunities simply because of where they came from. By removing barriers such as cost and providing participants with additional support like academic mentorship and wellness education, PCR broadened access to the sport of rowing and the myriad of benefits it offers, including college access, an expanded network of caring adults, improved physical health, access to nature, and more.
Today, PCR serves more than 350 kids annually, and the impact of our programs is clear: despite facing adversity – with 70% of youth coming from low-to-moderate income households and 65% having two or more risk factors for drop-out – PCR participants continue to excel. They consistently outperform the district population in SAT scores, GPA, on-time graduation, and college acceptance. To date,100% of PCR students have graduated on time and with plans to pursue further education or training
With success comes new challenges. Demand for our programs is at an all-time high, and we've had to turn young people away from our middle school program and summer camps. Many of our rowing shells and safety launches have aged beyond repair and must be replaced. We've also seen remarkable growth in the needs of our youth and have dramatically expanded our academic and mental health support services to match those needs.
PCR is so much more than just a rowing program, and to be fully transparent, we are behind in meeting our fundraising goals for the year. This week, we are kicking off our annual fundraising campaign and need to raise $100,000 before year-end.
Would you help us meet our goal by increasing your gift and making a donation today?
Your continued support keeps our programs free and accessible to all young people in the School District of Philadelphia. It enables us to change lives through the sport of rowing and helps us launch hundreds of bright futures each year. We are so grateful to have you on our team and appreciate your unwavering support of PCR.
